Ancestry Saturday: The Value Of Short Last Names
To this day, one of my old college roommates still misspells my name. With a short name, that's hard to do. Platte is an easy-to-understand variation though.
My kids' moms' maiden name, on the other hand, is just the opposite. I've found these variations of her family's last name in Census, immigration, and other documents:
Disselbrett
Disselbret
Disselbratt
Disselbree
Dessilebreth
Desselbret
Dieselbredt
Disselbritt
Disselbert
Disselbrede
Disselbrad
Discelbret
Discilbrit
Disselbred
Disselbied
Dusselbrede
Dirrelbrede
Diestelbreit
Even this one: Wediaselbrert
I bet there are more.
I guess that's the value of a short last name.
